Latvian tongue - What is the real life status of this language?

I wanted to know - is it the same like Gaelic in Ireland. In every book you can read that in Ireland they speak Irish and English, but in reality it's solely English. Is it the same with Latvian lingo in Latvia (Eastern Europe)? Maybe they use only russian these days?
