What do you think about collectives?

Do you believe that collectives (like a group or even a nation) have 'minds' of their own? Sort of like a hive mind or the collective subconscious of all of the individuals involved in said collective. If you do, what do you think that it takes for them to 'die'? Is it enough to lose all of their people, or do they have to be forgotten completely?
